Mark Your Calendars for Saturday, June 29, 2013!

Darlene's Dash PosterHi, Friends!  Great news!  On Saturday, June 29, 2013, there’s going to be a 5K Run/Walk at Northern Potter High School in Ulysses, PA. You can sign up to run, walk, or just sponsor someone.  It’s going to be a great time, so you’ll want to show up, even to cheer on the runners and walkers at the finish line.  Best of all, all proceeds collected for the 5K are going to benefit the Darlene J. Sitler Memorial Scholarship Fund!  How about that?!

Are you all excited, now that you’ve checked out the informational poster?  Do you want a registration form of your very own?  Send a message to djsitler5k@gmail.com, and you’ll be taken care of!

See you on June 29th!

It’s Only A Day Away!

Guess what’s tomorrow, Friends! THE DARLENE J. SITLER MEMORIAL 5K! That’s what!

We’ll have new, limited-edition yellow Tshirts especially for this year’s 5K. If you’re registered to participate in the 5K, you’ll automatically get one. If you don’t want any part of running or walking or 5Ks, but you still want one of these really neat shirts, you can buy one for $25. Or, if our classic black Tshirt is more your style, and you still haven’t picked yours up, we’ll have those available for sale at Saturday’s 5K, for $25, as well. New this year are limited edition commemorative silicone wristbands. Our Fun Runners will each get one for their participation in the Fun Run Event, but if you’re not Fun Running, you can buy your commemorative silicone wristband for $1.

Do you feel like I’m pitching sales at you, Friends? Sorry about that. Sort of. In case I didn’t mention it before, all the proceeds from this 5K go to the Darlene J. Sitler Memorial Scholarship Fund. And we’re so close to our goal of $25,000 that I can see it from here. As of this afternoon, the scholarship fund has $20,461.14. Wouldn’t it be just crazy-cool if we pushed it over the top at the 5K on Saturday? I mean, wouldn’t it?

And just think: it could be YOUR 5K Registration, YOUR Tshirt purchase, YOUR wristband purchase, YOUR donation that puts us over the top and makes us meet and exceed our $25,000 goal.

Now, if you want to come out and support the 5K, but you don’t want to run, walk, or fun-run, and you can’t swing a donation right now, don’t even feel bad. Don’t stay home Saturday morning. Come on up to the Northern Potter Schools. There’s more than one way to support a 5K. Bring your smiling face. Bring your encouraging words. Bring your cow-bells. I’ve always thought the Darlene J. Sitler Memorial 5K could use more cow-bell. Ms. Sitler was all about community spirit and inclusion and lifting one another up. So please, come on up to NP Schools on Saturday morning, if you’re able! We’d love to see you!

Congratulations to the 2014 Scholarship Winner!

The Committee for the Darlene J. Sitler Memorial Scholarship Fund is honored to announce that the winner of the 2014 Darlene J. Sitler Memorial Scholarship is Ellen Kibbe.  Ellen is headed to St. Bonaventure University in the fall, where she will major in English Education.

Congratulations, Ellen, and congratulations to the Class of 2014.  Excellent rehearsal!  Now, get out there and grab life by the horns!

Running Up That Hill: A Memorial 5K

On Saturday, June 29th, 2013, over ninety runners and walkers and many more cheerers gathered at Northern Potter’s Cross Country Course for the Darlene J. Sitler Memorial 5K Run / Walk.

Aaron Olney organized the event for his senior project and donated all the money raised, which amounted to over $3800, to the Darlene J. Sitler Memorial Scholarship Fund.  Medals were awarded to the top male and female runners and walkers in each age bracket, with runners Morgan Soule and Matt Morgan taking over all top honors.

It’s hard to imagine now, as we sit in boiling July heat, but at Northern Potter High School, the morning of June 29th was a perfect day for a 5K: overcast skies, moderate-to-a-little-chilly temperatures, especially early-on, and an intermittent light mist.

It seemed that at every turn, Darlene’s friends and co-workers marveled that the 5K would have been right up her alley, as she was an avid walker and had also begin running in 5K races.  Sure, there was the competitive race component to the Darlene J. Sitler Memorial 5K Run / Walk, but for the most part, people made the trek to Northern Potter and took on the Cross Country Course to have fun and honor and remember Darlene Sitler.  Laughter is the music of the angels, and there was plenty of that going around that day.

The Scholarship Committee would like to thank Aaron Olney and his family for planning this wildly successful 5K and for leaving no detail up to chance: everything went off without a hitch!  We’d also like to thank everybody who laced up their running and walking shoes and ventured up to Northern Potter and its Cross Country Course, and also everybody who came out to support and cheer on the runners and walkers.  They brought the good vibes with ‘em!  Also, a big thanks to everyone who donated money to the 5K and who’s donated to the Scholarship Fund.

Darlene Sitler was a big part of our community, and it was breathtaking to see her community come out in such a big way to remember and support her.  Thank you, thank you, thank you, everyone!
